The iron ore mine supporting the tiny town of Kirkenes in Northern Norway, went bankrupt in the autumn of 2015, sending more than a thousand people into unemployment just before Christmas. Many of them ended up in desperate situations, with mortgages impossible to maintain. And with houses difficult to sell due to the inevitable drop in the real estate market, they could not leave Kirkenes to find work elsewhere, either. The years leading up to the bankruptcy saw economic growth, high salaries and optimism, with correspondingly high levels of consumption. Many people signed expensive credit loans to finance high cost purchases which are impossible to sell now, and with down payments they cannot afford. With warmth and humor, the novel Arctic Pizza intends to tell the story of six of these people,
who find an unorthodox way of solving their financial problems.
